Folder Icons Not Showing in Windows? How to Fix It

Windows keeps a database of every icon it has drawn so it does not have to rebuild them constantly. It is a sensible optimisation that goes wrong in one specific way: when the cache gets out of step with reality, folders show the wrong icon, a generic white page, or nothing at all.

Here is how to fix it, from the quickest option to the most thorough.

Fix 1: restart Explorer (30 seconds)

This solves the majority of cases.

1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
2. Find Windows Explorer in the Processes list.
3. Select it and click Restart.

The taskbar will blink and redraw. Check your folders — usually the icons are correct again.

Fix 2: check the icon actually applied

Before assuming the cache is at fault, confirm the setting took:

1. Right-click the folder → Properties → Customize.
2. Click Change Icon. Does your .ico appear as the selection?

If the field is empty or shows a default, the icon was never applied. Reselect the file, click OK, then Apply, then OK — all three, in that order. Skipping Apply is a common miss.

Fix 3: confirm you are using an .ico file

The Change Icon dialog does not accept PNG or JPG. If you tried to browse to a PNG, Windows will not have listed it at all. You need a .ico file — which is why icon sets ship one.

Fix 4: rebuild the icon cache

If restarting Explorer did not hold, the cache database itself is corrupt. The safe, built-in route:

1. Open Disk Cleanup (search for it in the Start menu).
2. Select your system drive.
3. Tick Thumbnails and run the cleanup.
4. Restart the computer.

Windows rebuilds the cache from scratch on the next boot. This is slower than a manual delete of the cache files but it uses a supported tool rather than removing system files by hand.

Fix 5: check the folder is not read-only or synced

A folder inside a cloud-synced directory can have its desktop.ini overwritten by the sync client, which removes the custom icon. If icons keep reverting only inside your synced folders, that is the cause — and the fix is to customise folders outside the synced tree.

Similarly, a read-only folder cannot store the setting. Uncheck read-only in Properties first.
